What's happening in class?

In L.A. this week, we will continue working on ISAT preparation!  We will move away from the Buckle Down workbook and start using practice tests in both multiple choice test taking strategies, and extended reading response format and finesse.

In reading this week, students will continue working on their theme portfolios.  They have chosen many interesting themes for this assignment, including love, courage, determination, and creativity

I'm looking forward to seeing their finished products!
Here's to a good week!

What's happening in class?

In L.A. this week, we will continue working on expository writing.  Students will be learning about  problem/solution writing through reading an article about a specific problem and pinpointing the solutions offered to solve that problem.  Then in groups, they will be coming up with problems and brainstorming possible solutions for them.  They will also be learning about process narration writing, and then showcasing their knowledge by creating a process narration brochure on a chosen topic.

In reading class this week, we will continue our poetry unit.  Students will be reading 4 more poems, creating one more original poem connected to an "ode to" poem.  Friday will be their poetry test, for which students will be reading and analyzing a given poem and connecting it to their own lives.

***Below you will see some student examples of the "Moco Limping" emulation poems they wrote last week:

Tommy
By Makayla S.

I wish
I had a perfect
cousin. One who
shares video games.
One who doesn't
care what people
think of him.
One who is
happy to do
what he's told
to do, and one
who eats what
is placed
in front of
him.
But instead
I was cursed
with
a cousin who
just can't seem
to listen.
Hates doing
what hes told, and
gets what ever his
heart desires. While
his sisters are
left with hand me
downs and thrift
store bought
shoes.
Leaving me getting
in trouble for
what he did.
But when he
walks up to me,
with adorable eyes
that you only see
on puppies and asks
“kk? Will you be my
cousin, forever?”
my bitter heart
melts with bits
and pieces of happiness
then I finally realize.
I couldn't ask for a
better cousin.

Fred the Fish
By Erik S.

I was the boy who
 wanted a big animal,
a playful animal, an
 animal who would jump
 into my arms when I
came home. I wanted
something other than a fish.
Although I did want a dog
or something, if I got a fish
I would want one that doesn’t
wait by the edge of the tank
 just for food. One that
didn’t sit around all day
just for even more food.
I wanted a fish that would
 lurk about in the depths
of his tank. One that would
be the teacher of the school,
not the follower at the back
 who turns off the lights
when everyone’s gone from
the room. A fish that bossed
 the others around and didn’t
let them boss him. But alas
I have the only fish that would
be the follower and be bossed
and beaten for his lunch money.
My fish just sits there saying,
“Feed me, feed me.” My fish
is the only one that sits in the
top of the water staring at
everyone who brings food
into the room. But now as I
walk into the room and he
turns around to look at me,
I stare into his little eyes and
I now realize that my fish is
the only fish that would jump
out of the water for a single
 little bloodworm, a fish that
would venture through the
whole ocean to find me.
I now finally see that this little
betta is not just a pet,
but he is my friend.

Ethan Uncovered
By Paige Patera

When I was 5 years old,
I threw a coin into a
fountain and wished
 for a sibling. Then 9
 months later, eight pounds,
 and twelve ounces of snips,
 snails and puppy dog tails,
I had a little brother. When
I first held him, I looked at
him and knew he was going
to be this perfect little boy
that wears a halo over his head.
I thought he was going to be
my best friend. The one that
does everything with me. But
I should’ve listened to the saying,
be careful what you wish for.
My brother may have blond,
 hair, green eyes and look
adorable but, he really has
invisible horns, and a pointy tail.
Like most boys , he’s the type
of boy who is obsessed over
his video games and doesn’t
like to do anything with me
unless I play these games with
 him. He always complains
about going anywhere or trying
something new. It also bugs me
because he tries to act older
than I am and he bosses me
around. It upsets me when
my brother can be rude and
 difficult. Sometimes, I wan
t to walk away from him and
 pretend I don’t know him.
But then he says something
that makes me laugh so hard
I begin to cry. He looks at me
 with those big green shimmering
 eyes and adorable dimples,
I know my life wouldn’t be
complete if he wasn’t in it.

What's happening in class?

In L.A., students will be learning about and practicing expository writing.  They will be focusing on cause and effect, comparison and contrast, and descriptive writing.

In reading, we will be continuing our poetry unit.  Students did an excellent job on their "Moco Limping" emulation poems.  I will be showcasing some student examples of this writing assignment later this week!

We will be reading and discussing several poems from the 7th grade literature test.  Additionally, students will be trying their hands at creating original poems based on given styles and themes.  I'm looking forward to reading more poems from my budding poets! :)

The week of January 30th through February 3rd will be another busy one!

In L.A., students will be reviewing the ISAT extended response format applying it to text they have previously read.  Additionally, we'll be focusing on poetry in their Buckle Down workbooks.

In reading, we will begin a poetry unit.  Students will be learning and using poetic terms and then they will be applying them to poems throughout the unit.  The first poem we will be discussing, analyzing and emulating is titled "Moco Limping" a poem about a dog owner and his dog.  The author realizes his pet is not perfect, yet he is still very lovable!  Many life lessons here. :)
